New Orleans Satellite Government Website

The New Orleans Satellite Government is an ongoing and interactive project of research and transparency in city government.

With support from the Murphy Institute and the Provost, Tulane professors in both Political Science and the Law School developed a website, which seeks to provide, in one location, a database with accurate and comprehensive information on the system of satellite government that operates in New Orleans. There are over 140 boards, commissions, public benefit corporations, security and development districts, and other entities that undertake public functions on behalf of the people of New Orleans. These entities vary in their origin, operation, and oversight, and they accumulate over time.

Satellite government is defined here as the diverse array of boards, commissions, public trusts, public benefit corporations, security and development districts, and other entities. The authors of the website distinguish between these satellite entities and core agencies and departments of city government, which are not included in this database. They have also not included entities that are essentially subcontractors for the city.
