About The Speaker

Paul Hurley is Edward J. Sexton Professor of Philosophy at Claremont McKenna College and 2016-17 CEPA Faculty Fellow. His research focuses on issues in both ethics and metaethics, and his work has appeared in a number of highly regarded scholarly journals, including Ethics, Mind, Philosopher’s Imprint, and Philosophical Studies. He is the author of Beyond Consequentialism which was published by Oxford University Press in 2009. During his time at the Murphy Institute, Professor Hurley will be working on a project titled, “The Roots of Consequentialism,” in which he aims to undercut the outcome-centered theories of reasons, attitudes, actions, and values in which consequentialist moral theories are rooted. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1988.

The Murphy Institute

Established in memory of Charles H. Murphy, Sr. (1870-1954), and inspired by the vision of Charles H. Murphy, Jr. (1920-2002), The Murphy Institute exists to help Tulane faculty and students understand economic, moral, and political problems we all face and think about. More important, it exists to help us understand how these problems have come to be so closely interconnected.
