The Murphy Institute is thrilled to announce groundbreaking researcher Dr. Mona Hanna as the featured speaker for the 2025 Mary C. Parker Yates Lecture on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at 4:00 PM on Tulane’s Uptown Campus.

Mona Hanna is a pediatrician, scientist, activist, and director of the Michigan State University-Hurley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative. A nationally recognized child health researcher and advocate, Dr. Mona launched the community-partnered initiative in response to the Flint water crisis to improve outcomes for kids. She is also the Associate Dean for Public Health and C. S. Mott Endowed Professor of Public Health at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. 

Dr. Mona was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World and recognized as one of USA Today’s Women of the Century for her role in uncovering the Flint water crisis and leading recovery efforts. She is the author of The New York Times 100 most notable book, What the Eyes Don’t See: A Story of Crisis, Resistance, and Hope in an American City. Grounded in community-based participation, Dr. Mona and the Pediatric Public Health Initiative work with many local and national partners to boldly improve child health equity and share best practices. She is reimaging how society can come together to eliminate infant poverty with a first-in-the-nation program, Rx Kids, which aims to improve health, hope, and opportunity for families during the challenging time of pregnancy and infancy. Endowed in 1996 by Murphy Institute alumna Rebecca Yates ('89) Velander in memory of her mother, the Mary C. Parker Yates Lecture is The Murphy Institute’s premier public academic event. Created to foster university-wide discussion on contemporary issues, the annual Yates Lecture brings leading thinkers and public figures to Tulane's campus. It is free and open to all members of the Tulane community and the general public.
