Elizabeth Barnes is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Virginia. Her work focuses on the intersection of feminist philosophy, metaphysics, social philosophy, and ethics.
Professor Barnes has published many articles in top philosophy journals, including Ethics, Mind, Philosophical Studies, and Synthese. In her monograph The Minority Body: A Theory of Disability (Oxford UP, 2016), she challenges received views of disability to argue that it is a primarily social phenomenon - a way of being a minority and facing social oppression. Professor Barnes is also the editor of Current Controversies in Metaphysics (Routledge, 2015). She received her PhD from the University of St. Andrews in 2006.
