Robert Hartman

Robert Hartman is a 2020-2021 Visiting Research Professor and a Faculty Fellow at the Murphy Institute's Center for Ethics and Public Affairs. Previously, he held postdoctoral research fellowships at Stockholm University, Sweden, with the philosophy department (January 2019-August 2020) and at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, with the Lund-Gothenburg Project (February 2017-December 2018). He earned his Ph.D. in 2016 from St. Louis University. 

Professor Hartman's research interests are in ethics, metaphysics, and the philosophy of religion. He has published extensively on moral luck; currently, he is writing a monograph on character and moral responsibility as well as a series of papers about character, free will, and the afterlife. His books include a monograph, In Defense of Moral Luck: Why Luck Often Affects Praiseworthiness and Blameworthiness (Routledge, 2017), and a co-edited volume, The Routledge Handbook of the Philosophy and Psychology of Luck, edited with Ian M. Church ( Routledge, 2019).  His numerous articles appear in leading academic journals including the Australasian Journal of Philosophy and Philosophical Studies.
