Jason Byas
Assistant Professor of Philosophy (Joining July 2026)
Biography
Jason Byas will join The Murphy Institute and the Department of Philosophy as an Assistant Professor in July 2026. Prior to his appointment at Tulane, he served as a Junior Faculty Fellow with the Georgetown Institute for the Study of Markets and Ethics (GISME).
His primary research focuses on criminal punishment and its alternatives. Additionally, he has published widely on topics including reparations for historic injustice, the role of the state in political philosophy, political economy, the ethics of war, and philosophical issues surrounding political action.
Byas received his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Michigan, his M.A. in Philosophy from Georgia State University, and his B.A. in Philosophy and Sociology from the University of Oklahoma. As a member of the Murphy Core Faculty, he contributes to the Center for Ethics’ interdisciplinary research and teaches courses in the Undergraduate Program in Political Economy.
