Brian Kogelmann

Biography
Brian Kogelmann is a 2026–2027 Visiting Faculty Fellow at The Murphy Institute’s Center for Ethics and an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Political Science at Purdue University. He is also an Affiliated Fellow at the F.A. Hayek Program for Advanced Studies in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University.
Before that, Professor Kogelmann was an Assistant Professor in the John Chambers College of Business and Economics at West Virginia University and the Academic Director of the Kendrick Center for an Ethical Economy. Prior to this, he was an Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he founded the major in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. He completed his PhD at the University of Arizona.
Professor Kogelmann’s work is at the intersection of ethics and political economy. He has published on a wide array of topics including liberalism, property rights, reparations, the methodology of the social sciences, Marx’s theory of false consciousness, the ethics of the U.S. Senate filibuster, and much more. His first book, Secret Government: The Pathologies of Publicity, is on transparency in government. His most recent book, Political Meritocracy in the 21st Century, was published in January 2026 by Cambridge University Press. Future projects include a book on economic growth and one on political parties.
