Biography

Ramgopal Mettu is an Associate Professor of Computer Science, Faculty Director of the Online Computer Science Master's Program at Tulane University's School of Science and Engineering, and an Affiliated Faculty at The Murphy Institute.

Dr. Mettu conducts research in the application areas of computational biology, immunology and robotics. Though seemingly disparate, his work is tied together by novel algorithmic approaches in machine learning and discrete optimization, and has resulted in new (and useful) problem formulations and algorithms in these application areas. Specifically, his work is focused on the design and analysis of algorithms with guarantees on running time and solution quality that are motivated by, and are necessary for, problems in computational biology. Applications of his work include protein structure prediction and determination, protein-protein interactions, compound screening, as well as problems in high-throughput sequencing and proteomics.

Mettu received his BS, MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin. Since then he has held appointments at Dartmouth College (as a postdoctoral researcher) and UMass Amherst (faculty member in Electrical and Computer Engineering).
