CPPR Postdoctoral Scholars Program

The Murphy Institute’s Center for Public Policy Research Postdoctoral Scholarship Program was created to attract and support a wide range of young scholars from diverse backgrounds whose research experience, life experience, and professional background can significantly contribute to academic excellence in political economy.

The CPPR Postdoctoral Program is founded on the continued commitment to building an exceptional intellectual community and advancing the careers of scholars in political economy.

The program is open to all areas of study and provides two years of support for scholars engaged in full-time research and writing in political economy under the mentorship of a Tulane faculty member. The appointment is a full-time salaried position for a two-year term starting July 1. Scholars must have earned a Ph.D. or will receive their Ph.D. by the start of the appointment.

Faculty Mentors

An appointment as a Postdoctoral Scholar originates with the Tulane University faculty member who agrees to supervise the scholar. Mentors support the academic and professional development of postdoctoral scholars within the program in the following areas:

  • Regular meetings to discuss long and short-term goals to be accomplished during the scholar’s time at Tulane
  • Serve as a bridge to the scholar’s host department and colleagues
  • Facilitate the scholar’s professional development in national and international fora
  • Work with the scholar to prepare for successful entry into the job market

Host Department

Faculty member/s will be responsible for recruiting and hiring the postdoctoral scholar in an academic school or department at Tulane that engages the scholar in departmental meetings, colloquia, seminars, and other events.

The host department structures opportunities for networking, social interaction, teaching assignments, and scaffolding that supports the professional development of postdoctoral scholars within the program. The host department also administers the Scholars’ salary and provides administrative support during the Scholarship.

Application Guidelines

Interested faculty members are invited to submit proposals by November 1st for full consideration. The postdoctoral scholarship term starts on July 01 and scholars should be on campus by the Fall Semester. Submissions received by February 1st will be reviewed if funding is available.

Proposal Requirements

  1. Brief Description of Project: Provide a brief description of the proposed research project and its connection to political economy. Political economy, in its broadest sense, examines how public policy influences the market environment. Therefore, we welcome proposals from all public policy domains, including but not limited to housing, health, science, taxation, and environmental issues. However, our primary focus is on how these policy areas impact the economy.
  2. Contribution to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Highlight the project's or researcher's contribution to diversity, equity, and inclusion, or how it advances these values in the broader world.
