Dr. Button researches in three areas. First, he researches discrimination in labor markets on the basis of age or disability. He is currently working on a field experiment to quantify how much discrimination older workers face, and what factors influence the amount of discrimination. He also studies the impact of employment non-discrimination laws on older or disabled workers. Second, Button studies how tax incentives for economic development affect where firms operate, using tax incentives for the film industry as a case study. Third, Button’s research show how researchers using statistical or econometric methods can more accurately test the effects of policy interventions by using model averaging, a strategy that incorporates uncertainty about statistical models.

Established in memory of Charles H. Murphy, Sr. (1870-1954), and inspired by the vision of Charles H. Murphy, Jr. (1920-2002), The Murphy Institute exists to help Tulane faculty and students understand economic, moral, and political problems we all face and think about. More important, it exists to help us understand how these problems have come to be so closely interconnected.
