About the Speaker

Allen Buchanan is the James B. Duke Professor of Philosophy at Duke University and one of the world’s leading moral philosophers. His research focuses primarily on issues in the philosophy of international law, bioethics, and social moral epistemology.

Professor Buchanan is the author of over 100 scholarly articles and eleven books, including, most recently, The Heart of Human Rights (Oxford University Press, 2013) and Beyond Humanity? The Ethics of Biomedical Enhancement (Oxford University Press, 2010). The recipient of grants and fellowships from the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Medicine, and the National Humanities Center, Professor Buchanan is a consultant on the President’s Council on Bioethics, and has served on the Advisory Council for the National Human Genome Research Institute from 1998-2001.
