The Murphy Institute Seminar Series in Philosophy
Organized by the Tulane Philosophy Department, the Murphy-Philosophy Seminars are a series of workshops where CE Faculty Fellows and distinguished guest speakers present works in progress on ethics, political philosophy, political theory, moral psychology, the philosophy of law, and intellectual history. Papers are distributed one week beforehand to the participants who read the paper and prepare discussion questions for the presenter.
Paul Weithman is the Glynn Family Honors Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Notre Dame. He earned his Master's and Ph.D. in philosophy at Harvard, where he wrote my doctoral dissertation under the direction of John Rawls and Judith Shklar. He joined the faculty at the University of Notre Dame in 1991. He chaired the Philosophy Department between 2001 and 2007, and co-directed the Glynn Family Honors Program from 2014 to 2021. He currently directs the interdisciplinary minor in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
Although Professor Weithman's work is primarily in political philosophy, he has also worked in moral philosophy, religious ethics and medieval political theory. He has lectured on five continents and consulted about ethics education on a sixth. He won a Kaneb Teaching Award, a Joyce Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the Thomas P. Madden Award for the Outstanding Teaching of Freshmen.
