The Murphy Institute Seminar Series in Political Science

Each semester, The Murphy Institute proudly sponsors a dynamic series of seminars and workshops organized across key Tulane academic departments: Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, and Law. These seminar series serve as a vital platform for faculty, visiting scholars, and researchers to present cutting-edge work on contemporary issues in political economy, public policy, ethics, and social values. The Murphy Seminar in Political Science, held in partnership with the Department of Political Science, covers all aspects of contemporary political science, including comparative politics, public policy, international relations, American politics, and normative theory. Papers are distributed beforehand to the participants who read the paper and prepare discussion questions for the presenter. 

Xiaobo Lü is the Jack M. Forcey Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. His research explores the relationships between fiscal policies, party-building, and state-society relations in authoritarian regimes, particularly in China. He is particularly interested in the formation and functioning of political parties and institutions in authoritarian regimes across both historical and contemporary contexts. Lü earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University in 2011.

​Along with Yuhua Wang (Harvard), Professor Lü co-organize the Chinese Politics Research in Progress (CPRP). This is a virtual workshop that promotes scholarly research on Chinese politics in comparative politics and international relations. The CPRP virtual workshop is open to the public.
