Three New Faculty Fellows Join the Murphy Institute

The Murphy Institute is happy to welcome three new Faculty Fellows to the Center for Ethics and Public Affairs for the 2016-2017 academic year:

• Paul Hurley is Edward J. Sexton Professor of Philosophy at Claremont McKenna College and received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1988. His research focuses on issues in both ethics and metaethics. During his time at the Murphy Institute, Professor Hurley will be working on a project titled, “The Roots of Consequentialism.” in which he aims to undercut the outcome-centered theories of reasons, attitudes, actions, and values in which consequentialist moral theories are rooted.
• Daniel Jacobson is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Michigan, his recent research focuses on issues in ethics, political philosophy, and moral psychology. During his tenure at the Murphy Institute, he will be working on a project titled, “Reconstructing John Stuart Mill,” a monograph which argues for a new and unique interpretation of Mill’s moral and political philosophy.
• Rosa Terlazzo is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Kansas State University. She earned her Ph.D. from the Australian National University in 2013, and her research focuses on issues in moral and political philosophy. During her stay at the Murphy Institute, Professor Terlazzo will be working on a series of papers which explore the intersections between adaptive preferences, transformative experiences, and well-being with the cumulative goal of providing an argument for the importance of adaptive preferences in moral and political philosophy.

These visiting colleagues will spend the academic year at the Murphy Institute’s Center for Ethics and Public Affairs at Tulane University, devoting most of their time to their own research projects. The Faculty Fellows will also participate in the Center for Ethics and Public Affairs Faculty Seminar along with Tulane faculty and graduate students.
