The Murphy Institute Sponsors the Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE) Society’s Ninth Annual Meeting

For the third consecutive year, The Murphy Institute’s Center for Ethics served as a proud sponsor of the Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE) Society’s Annual Meeting. The PPE Society is an international organization dedicated to fostering collaboration across the disciplines of philosophy, political science, and economics that together provide critical frameworks for understanding and addressing shared social challenges.

The three-day conference held November 13–15 at The Westin Canal Place in New Orleans brought scholars from around the world together to discuss a wide array of issues in political economy. Presentations explored topics such as Justice in Markets and Contracts: Monopolies, Segregation, and Free Riding on Reproduction; The Ethics of Behavioral Policy Interventions; and Reparations: From Theory to Practice

Murphy Institute affiliates were well represented at this year’s meeting, participating as speakers, presenters, respondents, and moderators: 

  • Amethyst Bias, Center for Ethics Graduate Fellow (2024–2025), presented "Socrates Meets Siri: The Ethics of Human-AI Interaction.”
  • Elvira Basevich, Center for Ethics Faculty Fellow (2025–2026), presented "Transitional Justice and Ideal Theory: Implications of Charles Mills’s Ideology Critique" and moderated the session "The Paradoxes of Racial Progress.”
  • Jeffrey Colgan, Center for Ethics Graduate Fellow (2025–2026), moderated two sessions, "Communication Norms & PPE” and "Embracing Limits in Environmental Ethics and Policy: Strategies for Sustainable Coexistence.”
  • Mario Juarez-Garcia, Murphy Institute Core Faculty, presented "Developing Systems: Fighting Corruption by Reducing Complexity” and "Institutional Oblivion.”
  • Johanna Jauernig, Center for Ethics Faculty Fellow (2024–2025), presented "Distinguishing Disasters and Crises: An Empirical Analysis of Price Gouging Fairness Perceptions.”         
  • Zijing Li, Center for Ethics Graduate Fellow (2024–2025), presented "The Ethics of Online Indignation.”
  • Eric Schliesser, Center for Ethics Faculty Fellow (2025–2026), moderated a session on the history of PPE and presented "The Centrality of Monopoly to the Intellectual Debate Between Marxist Economists and the Non-Marxist Mainstream.”
  • Chad Van Schoelandt, Director of the Center for Ethics, moderated "Economic Knowledge (and Ignorance) in Classical Athens.”
  • Chen Wang, Center for Ethics Graduate Fellow (2025–2026), presented "Harm to Self-Esteem, Agency, and Conditional Moral Rules.”
  • Eric Weiland, Center for Ethics Faculty Fellow (2023–2024), served as a respondent in "Author Meets Critics: Against the Tyranny of Outcomes.” 

The event was informative and well-attended, expanding connections and creating opportunities for collaboration with scholars who have special interests in topics related to political economy.
