About the Speaker

Mónica Hernández is Postdoctoral Fellow at the Education Research Alliance of New Orleans (ERA-New Orleans) and Tulane University’s Department of Economics. Her fields of interest include economics of education, development economics, labor economics and early childhood education. Her research examines the role that outside of school settings play on educational inequality gaps, in the context of both developing and developed countries.

Health Policy Working Group: Charles Stoecker

About The Speaker

Dr. Stoecker is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Health Systems and Development at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. He is a health economist interested in designing and analyzing policies that affect early life events. Dr. Stoecker’s work has explored the impacts of vaccination policy efficiency, air pollution regulation, and health insurance coverage on children’s health.

Regulation Workshop: Renuka Sane

Professor Sane will present the result of a study in progress, Regulating Consumer Transactions in India: Do Disclosures Matter? The Case of Life Insurance, and she will discuss recent developments in economic and financial law in India.

Professor Sane’s research focuses on household finance and regulation of consumer financial transactions. In recent years, she has been involved in a number of official legal reform initiatives in India, including the Financial Sector Legislative Reforms Commission and the Bankruptcy Law Reform Committee.

Political Economy Workshop: Matthias Matthijs

Matthias Matthijs focuses his research on the politics of economic crises, the role of economic ideas in economic policymaking, the politics of inequality, the limits of regional integration, and the erosion of democratic legitimacy in the advanced industrial world. He is the recipient of a 2015 Johns Hopkins Catalyst Award in recognition of his work as a promising early-career investigator.

Public Policy Working Group: Wei Long

Wei’s research concentrates on financial econometrics, time series, and applied econometrics. His current work focuses on model selection and model averaging. For example, Wei has studied dependence structures among different financial markets by implementing a model averaging method on the mixture copula model. He has used the model averaging method to estimate the treatment effect of social policy (e.g., Virginia’s justice reform in 1995). And he has researched the explosive behavior in the gold market since the 1960s.

Health Policy Working Group: Gultekin Gollu

Dr. Gollu received his PhD in Economics from University of Wisconsin-Madison. He finished his BA and MA in Economics in Turkey. His main research interest is on economic and health outcomes of public health policies. His recent research focuses on labor supply effects of several policy changes under the Affordable Care Act. He is also interested in other public health topics; one of his studies is on the internet’s effect on patients’ mental health.

Presentation on Funding Opportunities in Policy Research: Lou Franchina

With more than fifteen years of experience in Tulane’s development office, Lou Franchina will present an overview of several private grant opportunities for faculty in the areas of policy and social sciences. This presentation is intended to be a mere introduction, and Lou welcomes the opportunity to meet with faculty individually to discuss their research areas and related funding needs.
