Biography

John Louis Howard is Associate Director of the Murphy Institute. He has degrees from the University of Georgia (A.B., Philosophy, 1982) and Tulane University (M.A., Philosophy, 1986, and Ph.D., Philosophy, 1992). He has been a faculty member at Tulane University, Loyola University, Xavier University, and the University of Mississippi. He also served as the Director of Bookstore Services at the University of Chicago Bookstore.

Dr. Howard is the major advisor for the undergraduate program in Political Economy. In 1991, he received the Loyola Student Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Teaching. In 2007, he was nominated for the Weiss Presidential Fellowship for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, and he was awarded the 2007 Mortar Board Award for Excellence in Non-Tenured Teaching, presented by the Newcomb Memorial College Institute and the Newcomb Alumnae Association. The Tulane Honors Program designated Dr. Howard as the 2009-2010 Honors Professor of the Year. In 2018, he was presented with the Outstanding Major Advisor Award by Newcomb-Tulane College.

The Murphy Institute

Established in memory of Charles H. Murphy, Sr. (1870-1954), and inspired by the vision of Charles H. Murphy, Jr. (1920-2002), The Murphy Institute exists to help Tulane faculty and students understand economic, moral, and political problems we all face and think about. More important, it exists to help us understand how these problems have come to be so closely interconnected.
