About the Speaker

Thomas Hurka is the Chancellor Henry N. R. Jackman Distinguished Professor of Philosophical Studies at the University of Toronto. Professor Hurka has written on a number of topics within the fields of moral and political philosophy, and he is widely considered one of the most prominent defenders of perfectionist moral theories. He is the author or editor of eight books, including Perfectionism (Oxford University Press, 1993) and Virtue, Vice, and Value (Oxford University Press, 2003). He has published over sixty articles, which have appeared in numerous highly regarded venues such as, Journal of Philosophy, Analysis, Ethics, and Philosophy and Phenomenological Research. Professor Hurka has been the recipient of many awards throughout his career, including a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 2006. He earned his D.Phil. from Oxford University in 1980.
