More Information
As the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding, The New York Times columnist Jamelle Bouie joins Carla Laroche (Tulane Law and Murphy Institute Core Faculty) to reflect on what many historians call America’s “second founding”: Reconstruction.
Bouie and Laroche will examine this fleeting yet consequential moment in American history when, for a little over a decade, the nation lived up to its founding creed and achieved multiracial democracy. Their conversation will trace Reconstruction’s hard-won achievements, its violent overthrow through Southern “Redemption” and the rise of Jim Crow, and the unique legal and political history of post-war New Orleans and Louisiana.
As a leading voice on issues of race, politics, and justice, Bouie will also consider how to apply the lessons of Reconstruction to address our own fraught political moment.
